Webinar: Who owns the Arctic? — an Introduction to Arctic Governance organized by EU-PolarNet 2 and APECS

Presenter: Volker Rachold, Head of the German Arctic Office at the Alfred Wegener Institute

Moderator: Nicole Biebow, Alfred Wegener Institute and EU-PolarNet 2 coordinator

Due to the increasing interest and awareness of the global significance of the Arctic, questions about stewardship and governance of the region are being asked more frequently. Governance structures suitable for effectively addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the circumpolar North are becoming more relevant than ever. This EU-PolarNet 2 and APECS webinar gives an overview of the legal regime of the Arctic and outlines the existing Arctic governance structures.

Ebru Cyamaz and Elena Adasheva. APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists) Commentary

Together with Ebru Cyamaz (Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey), we solicited contributions and co-authored a collective statement from APECS on the topic of Arctic governance, delivered at the webinar. The APECS commentary addressed two questions: 1. What is the role of APECS and young scientists in Arctic governance? 2. Could science diplomacy serve as a mechanism for maintaining cooperation in the Arctic in times of global crisis?
